Health Insurance, a General Statement Gingrey: MEDICARE As a physician, I'm a firm believer in the old adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". As a Member of Congress, I want to make sure our federal health programs like Medicare are emphasizing the benefits of preventative care as well. I was a strong proponent of the Medicare Modernization Act that Congress passed in 2003 to help seniors realize the benefits of preventative medicine. The bill expanded Medicare's preventative screening services, and began coverage of important procedures like prostate and breast cancer exams, and diabetes and cardiovascular screening. In addition, the Medicare Modernization Act created Medicare Part D, a prescription drug coverage benefit available to all Medicare enrollees. Part D will help seniors access the drugs they need to stay well. The initial sign up period for this new benefit runs through May 15, 2006, and coverage begins the month following enrollment. I'm working hard to educate 11th District seniors about the benefits of the program and how to enroll. To learn more about Medicare Part D, please view the "related files" below, call 1-800-MEDICARE or visit the website www.Medicare.gov. By modernizing Medicare, we're helping seniors prevent disease as well as treat it. This allows our loved ones live healthier lives. I’ll continue working to make Medicare a stronger, more efficient and more effective program.
